Fokker D VII - Jasta 72
(12" x 16” Oil on Masonite –2007)
This painting was on the front cover of 'Over The Front', a World War One Aviation Historians quarterly magazine, volume 22, number 2 for summer 2007. The painting depicts Jasta 72 German ace, Ltn. Karl Menckhoff, and his Fokker D.VII in flight. After 95th Aero Squadron pilot Lt. Walter AVery shot down Menckhoff on 25 July 1918, he cut the "M" monogram from the fuselage of Menckhoff's aircraft to keep as a souvenir. In a moving ceremony at the recent "Double Aces" seminar in Washington D.C., this priceless artifact was returned to Menckhoff's son Gerhard. Making the presentation was Lt. Avery's daughter, Bette Avery Applegate. A complete writeup of the event was featured on page 188 of the magazine, along with a picture of the artist presenting the finer points of understanding and appreciating WWI aviation art.
