Valentines Day
(18" x 24” Oil on Belgian Linen – 2008)
Leonia, New Jersey resident Valentine Burger watches as 22 victory ace and commanding officer of Jagdstaffel 11 falls in flames on 11 August 1918. Burger, then flying with French Escadrille C.46, was nose gunner in the Caudron R.11 #13 depicted here. The great French gun ships were used as protection for French bombing formations and in this capacity, Burger was given credit for downing the German ace during August 1918.
This painting, and an article based on Burgers memoirs, appear in the Spring 2008 edition of Over the Front, the Journal of the League of WW I Aviation Historians.
